SAYRE is a small, rural community surrounded by farmland, a wildlife refuge and plenty of opportunities for hunting, fishing, camping and outdoor activities. We’re all different but share common values of love for God, our country, family & neighbors. We view newcomers as new FRIENDS to be made, bringing healthy diversity and new ideas to our community

In Sayre Oklahoma, our ROOTS RUN DEEP. Sayre was founded in 1901 as a railroad hub and today is the County Seat of Beckham County; in fact, the Beckham County Courthouse has a cameo appearance in the 1940 movie The Grapes of Wrath. Many historic buildings constructed in the early 1900’s still stand proudly on Main Street, a testament to the resiliency of the people of Sayre who have the responsibility of caring for our town. Several places in Sayre are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It gets even better!  History meets Nostalgia at the intersection of MAIN STREET and HISTORIC ROUTE 66, which runs through the heart of Sayre. Visitors from all over the world stop in Sayre to document this part of their journey on the Mother Road.

Sayre’s HISTORIC CITY PARK, also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is located two miles south of town on the original RT 66 highway. There you’ll find the city’s swimming pool, which opened in 1940 as a WPA project, along with an original red rock rotunda and a red rock wall that, back in the day, separated the vehicles driving down RT 66 from the park itself. All these original structures still function today.  Included inside the park is an RV Park, the Sayre National Golf Course & Clubhouse,  Miniature Golf , the Shortgrass Rodeo Arena, a large, covered pavilion, playgrounds, three fishing ponds, tennis courts and a volleyball court.

Visit the Shortgrass Country Museum and learn of the railroad history of Sayre or of the Legendary Walter Merrick, renowned as the first quarter horse breeder and champion quarter horse owner.

You’ll have to stay awhile....Few things are more stirring than our magnificent sunsets.
