Found in Sayre’s former Rock Island Railroad Depot, the Shortgrass Country Museum is one of Sayre’s most prominent, historic landmarks, having been moved from its original site in 1930 to the center of downtown Sayre.
In itself, the Rock Island Depot is a charming building that has been preserved in order to allow the architectural features and character from a bygone era to shine in the 21st Century! Once inside, the museum features various, changing displays pertaining to every facet of early-day life on the Shortgrass prairie. In addition, the museum is proud to showcase various artist exhibitions from time to time.
Admission is free. We are a “work in progress” with great volunteers and new ideas! We are working to revitalize our existing exhibits and add new exhibits. We hope to remodel our facility in the months ahead in preparation for the Route 66 Centennial Celebration in 2026
Please note, the museum is fully ADA compliant, and Bus/Motor Coach parking is available.
